SECTION 1.

Messrs. E. D. and Messrs. D. Sassoon and Co. to Foreign Office.-(Received June 12.)

17, St. Helen's Place, E.C., June 11, 1912. Sir,

WE have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your two letters dated the 6th instant, and we trust that the representations made by His Majesty's Minister at Peking to the Chinese Government will have the effect of putting an immediate end to the restrictions placed upon the importation of Indian opium in contravention of the recent Opium Agreement.

The effect of these illegal restrictions upon the trade has been such, and the losses incurred by British merchants so heavy, that we have been urged by all those interested In this event, may we hope to claim compensation from the Chinese Government, that His Majesty's Government will give their support to the claim, with a view to its being fairly met by the Chinese Government.

We have, &c.

E. D. SASSOON AND Co. DAVID SASSOON AND CO. (Limited).
